Apple iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 15 - Is it worth the upgrade?

One of the most common questions we get asked is should I upgrade to the new iPhone, is it worth it? In this weeks edition of the Weekly Byte we want to cover some of the key features and differences between the models and some of the reasons why you should (or shouldn't) upgrade.

The new iPhone 16

Firstly, let's cover off the new iPhone 16 line up, announced last week. We still have the two sizes available across both the standard and Pro line ups. These being the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, and the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.

They are all available for pre-order, with delivery starting September 20th.

Pricing and Storage

Pricing starts from $1,399. This is actually $100 less than when the iPhone 15 was released a year ago. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $1,799, which is $50 less than last years model. Storage options stay the same as last year, with the standard models being offered in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The iPhone 16 Pro adds 1TB. Note the iPhone 16 Pro Max is not available in the 128GB option.

My Byte offers very competitive trade-in credits for any older iPhones, so if after reading this article you are convinced you need the new one, make sure to check with our team on the best deal possible.

Display Changes

One of the most notable changes are in the displays. All models now have a 1 nit minimum brightness, which means the display can dim to ultra low brightness. This means more battery life for everyone!

The Pro models also feature slightly larger displays than the 15 Pro predecessor. 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch, up 0.2 inches on the 15 Pro range.

Chip

Apple has used its new A18 chipset which boast a small spec bump against the previous A17. In real world examples it is likely you will only see this difference when taking advantage of pro Apps or gaming.

Camera Setup

The cameras have also seen a small spec bump across the range. The iPhone 16 range now has the ability to take Macro photos, with an all new ultra-wide lens. The iPhone 16 Pro range now sports a 48 megapixel camera for those super close up shots.

Video recording on the iPhone 16 Pro range has also taken some leaps, your now able to record in 120 fps, with a new studio quality four-mic array.

Camera Control Button

Apple is pretty proud of this new hardware feature, available able across all iPhone 16 models. A new button on the side of the phone allows you to open the camera app instantly. Once in the app you can use this same button to quickly adjust settings along with taking a photo or starting a recording. We cant wait to se this in action!

Apple Intelligence

We are going to leave this one for its own rundown, but Apple has finally entered the world of AI, although we have to wait until December to see those changes through a software update.

Verdict, should you upgrade?

If your current iPhone is anything other than an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, then you won't have access to Apple Intelligence. If this is a deal breaker then an upgrade is a must!

For everyone else, longer battery life, spec bumps in both camera and overall performance, along with bigger screens on the Pro line up might just be enough to peak your interest.

Check out what we can offer you for your old iPhone, this may be enough to get you over the line!
